Overland AI is a pioneering defense technology company dedicated to transforming land operations with advanced ground autonomy solutions. Founded in 2022 and based in Seattle, Overland AI develops cutting-edge autonomy software, hardware, and integrated systems that enable ground vehicles to navigate complex off-road and contested environments without GPS or direct human control. Its proprietary OverDrive autonomy stack, modular SPARK hardware, and intuitive OverWatch command-and-control platform are field-tested and deployed with U.S. military units to increase operational effectiveness, reduce risk to personnel, and expand tactical capabilities.
Engagement
I was brought on by a creative agency as a strategic partner to help develop the branding and overall visual story for Overland AI during a critical stage of the company’s growth. The agency needed senior-level creative leadership with experience in defense, autonomy, and mission-driven technology to translate highly technical capabilities into a clear, credible, and compelling brand narrative. My role focused on defining the visual language, tone, and storytelling framework that could scale across digital, product, and marketing touchpoints—ensuring the brand communicated trust, capability, and real-world readiness. Working closely with the agency and stakeholders, I helped align the visual identity with Overland AI’s mission, operational use cases, and defense audience expectations, creating a cohesive foundation for long-term brand execution.

Branding
For defense and commercial operators working in unpredictable, unmapped, and high-risk environments, automation has the potential to radically improve safety and efficiency. Overland AI had been quietly developing advanced off-road automation technology and was preparing to emerge from stealth.

Positioning in a rugged category
While most automation has been confined to well-mapped consumer road networks, Overland AI operates where maps don’t exist and conditions constantly shift. I defined a brand strategy centered on delivering the most advanced autonomy for the most demanding environments: positioning Overland as a category-defining force in off-road automation.
Visual Roadmap
Everything about the brand system, from typography to imagery, was designed to reflect Overland AI’s grounding in reality. Visuals emphasize the rugged terrain and vehicles the product supports, creating immediate relevance and clarity for users operating in extreme environments. The result is a brand that speaks with authority, clarity, and purpose: built to lead in a space where performance and trust are paramount.
